Elden Ring Fans Debate What Old Soulsborne Gear Should Return In DLC

Aug 16, 2023

Mimic heads, Black Knight Halberds, and... pistols. These are the things Elden Ring fans want to see return from past Soulsborne games.

Elden Ring might be its own thing, but there's no denying the connections to Dark Souls. We awaken in a ruined civilisation where laughing nihilists indifferent to the outcome lead us on paths of destruction where we slaughter gods and get tricked by bald men in caves. And since there are so many obvious nods and references to old Soulsborne games, fans are discussing what they want to see directly return in the DLC.

"In the DLC, there will be a room with a chest, containing a weapon from previous titles, what would you bring back to The Lands Between?" Uharc123 posted to the Elden Ring subreddit, positing a hypothetical where anything from previous FromSoft games can return.

One suggested the Vanquisher's Seal, AKA the ring from Dark Souls 2 that makes you punch really hard. The trade-off is that you have to join the Company of Champions and earn 50 Awestones. But boxing your way through Drangleic? Worth it. Others suggested the Dragon Tooth, Havel's big fuck-off stick. Plenty of good memories of clumsily whacking footsoldiers with that thing. Outside of Dark Souls, another commenter put forward the Threaded Cane, one of Bloodborne's starter weapons. It doubles as another stick to whack people with, but it's also a deadly whip.

Of course, Bloodborne offers up another opportunity--guns. If the denizens of Elden Ring weren't frightened by the unstoppable god-slaying legend who (probably) took down Dragonlord Placidusax and Malenia, imagine how they'd react to that same legend whipping out a pair of pistols. Now imagine how they'd react to seeing you with the Black Knight Halberd. Not the nerfed ones from the sequels--the broken one from the original Dark Souls. If you get that early on, you essentially toggle an easy mode.

Not everyone wants to whip out a weapon of immense power, others are sentimental; "The Firelink Greatsword," UmbralUmbreon said. "I think it would make for a nice homage to the Souls series without seeming too out of place." Another suggestion was the Mimic head, which drains your health but ups your item discovery. There are no Mimics in Elden Ring, but it does recycle Dark Souls' chest model, so it'd certainly fit. Especially if there are Mimics in Shadow of the Erdtree.

But of course, not everyone stuck to the idea of Soulsborne weapons, as the top comment from TheTimorie suggests "A six-way rocket launcher or a minigun from Armored Core". Forget the flimsy Victorian pistols.
